Little Rock artist Emily Wood returns to El Dorado to judge the 2011 Membership Show and Competition this November.

Wood-headshotAbout the Judge:
Presently a painting instructor for the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School, Wood began studying art at Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, Texas, in 2000. She continued her studies at the University of Reading, Reading, England, before completing her Bachelors of Art at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Wood continued her graduate studies at the Art Students' League of New York in New York City before receiving her Master of Arts from The University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2011.

A Camden native and Little Rock resident, Wood's work has been included in exhibitions across the states of Arkansas, Georgia, and Louisiana. SAAC patrons experienced Wood's solo exhibition "Translated in Paint" in the Merkle and Price Galleries this past March. Winner of multiple awards, including a nomination from the National Museum of Women in the Arts "Women to Watch 2010," Wood is making her mark as a fresh new voice in today's art world. Emily's Work can be found at the Heights Gallery on Kavanaugh Blvd. in Little Rock, and on her website at www.emilywoodart.com.

View on Judging a Competition:
"I view the judging process as a balance of choosing pieces with technical superiority and effective communication of ideas. Judging art cannot help but be somewhat subjective because of the inherent tendency of art to connect to people in different ways based on what the viewer brings to the work. However, the effectiveness of communication can be judged more objectively even if what is being communicated is more subjective. This includes technical elements that can also be judged objectively. In the end, I will carefully study each piece and make judgments based on technical elements, ability to communicate, and presence of new ideas."
