SAAC will present the endearing and timeless tale of “James and the Giant Peach, JR” for their spring 2020 youth theatre project. Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of El Dorado, the production is scheduled for April 24-25, 2020, with auditions being held on January 11 and 13, 2020.
“This is our fifth collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of El Dorado,” says Laura Allen, Executive Director for SAAC. “Their investment in Youth Theatre is more than just an extra-curricular activity. Their support means that the program can be offered free of charge to all the students involved, and gives them the chance to be part of the creation of a top-notch theatrical production, regardless of their ability to pay tuition. They are able to work together in support of a larger creative goal, while also making strong relationships with peers and adults. It is hard to over-state the importance of giving all children their own chance for a standing ovation!”
Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most poignantly quirky stories, Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach JR.” is a brand new take on this “masterpeach” of a tale. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic.
When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of adventure along the way.
Roald Dahl is a favorite author among many young readers, creating beloved stories such as ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘The BFG’, and ‘Matilda’. Among those beloved stories, “James and the Giant Peach” may not be as well-known, but Roald Dahl certainly doesn’t fail to deliver the same wit, imagination, and curious characters that make his stories so accessible to readers of all ages.
