Gay Bechtelheimer’s Painting with Paper: The Homage Series will be in the Price Gallery at the South Arkansas Arts Center February 8 – March 12. The series is an evolution of the WSJ Series that she completed in 2017. She found that she wanted to continue the approach used in the WSJ Series, but utilizing a different palette.
She said, “I completed five during the summer of 2019, and when the pandemic forced closure, I thought I would push the series further and move through the color wheel.” Thirty four compositions later, Bechtelheimer completed her “Covid Project”.
Bechtelheimer added, “When, in the summer of 2020, SAAC featured artwork created by artists during the closure, I laughingly told Laura that I could not participate because I would take up all the space in the Price Gallery. She graciously said that I could do just that.
“Since my career is art education,” she continued, we thought that the perfect time to display the series would be in conjunction with the SAAC Student Art Competition.”
Each composition is mounted on an 8” x 8” panel. They are created from magazine paper. Bechtelheimer said that, for her, they are equivalent to sketches and will be developed into paintings at a later time. See more of Bechtelheimer’s work at www.gaybeck.com.
