The November lecture will be the first in a two-part exploration of the work of the Post-Impressionist movement, including artists as diverse and well known as Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Bechtelheimer will usher her audience into a time in Europe in which the once-controversial work of the French Impressionists had become conventionally accepted by the public. The environment was ripe for rebellion, and the post-impressionists created that upheaval by leaving naturalism behind and embracing abstraction, symbolism, and emotional exploration.
“It was time for a revolt from a group of artists feeling defiant. Though their methods of expression and painterly styles were distinctly different, these artists were collectively unified in their intent to move beyond depicting observed impressions and have their art reflect deeper emotions and inner experiences.”
The Post-Impressionists represent the pivotal bridge between traditional art and the first avant-garde movements. Given the depth of the movement’s legacy, the November art talk will focus on the work of Georges Seurat, Paul Cezanne, and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, and January’s lecture will continue through the work of Henri Rousseau, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.
The free event will begin with refreshments starting at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby, followed by Bechtelheimer’s presentation onstage.
