Bechtelheimer is currently hosting a three part series that highlights the European modernists, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and the German Expressionists, whose work transformed conventional methods of creating art in the 20th century.

Returns to the SAAC stage on Tuesday, January 30 artist Gay Bechtelheimer will present the next “Art Talk” focusing on the work of the German Expressionist painters. Focused on presenting the world through emotional experience, rather than physical reality, Expressionism was a modernist movement of the early 20th century. The artists’ work was reflective of the quickly changing modern world in which they suddenly found themselves.

“Amid the dramatic urbanization and industrialization that occurred in Germany prior to World War I, a collective group of artists known as the German Expressionists depicted their zeitgeist, the feelings of disillusion they saw and felt in society as the promise of war loomed,” said Bechtelheimer. “Their work was emotive and unrestrained as they conveyed their ideas of the anxious realities they were experiencing.”

The free event will begin with refreshments starting at 6:00 p.m. in the lobby, followed by Bechtelheimer’s presentation onstage.
