The South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) will welcome the work of local artist Terry Norman in his upcoming exhibition, “More Than A Fish: An Artist’s Journey,” on view September 29 through October 29 in SAAC’s Merkle Gallery. The public is invited to meet and visit with the artist at a special opening reception on Thursday, October 8, from 5:30 to 7pm.
Norman’s journey as an artist began several years ago with little more than a love of painting and a willingness to experiment. With no formal training, he initially turned to watercolor, focusing primarily on fish. He describes those early days as being much like learning to play music by ear – a process of exploration, observation and discovery. Painting also provided a relaxing diversion from his work, much like settling down with a good book.
As his interest in art grew, Norman sought out local artist and instructor Gay Bechtelheimer for lessons. Under her guidance, he was introduced to a variety of artistic mediums, techniques and tools, as well as the broader world of art history. His education continued beyond the classroom as he traveled to art museums across the country, studying the work and techniques of artists along the way.
The upcoming exhibition represents a significant milestone in that ongoing journey. Three years ago, Bechtelheimer encouraged Norman to consider exhibiting his work at SAAC. At the time, the prospect of mounting a full exhibition, without the conventional preparation or formal art background, seemed daunting.
With a little encouragement from his instructor, however, Norman kept painting. Now, “More Than A Fish: An Artist’s Journey” offers visitors an opportunity to see where that journey has led.
The exhibition’s title reflects Norman’s evolution as an artist – from his early watercolor paintings of fish to a broader exploration of subjects, mediums and artistic approaches. More than simply a collection of artwork, the exhibition chronicles the process of an artist discovering his own creative voice.
SAAC galleries are free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. The South Arkansas Arts Center is located at 110 E. Fifth Street in El Dorado. For more information, visit saac-arts.org or call 870-862-5474.
