This year, the three part series will highlight the European modernists, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and the German Expressionists, whose work transformed conventional methods of creating art in the 20th century.
Artist Gay Bechtelheimer will present an Art Talk focused on French painter and sculptor Henri Matisse on Thursday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. This lecture, the second in Bechtelheimer’s series on the European modernists, will take a look at the artist’s sprawling body of work, which spans more than 50 years and bridges the gap between classical and modern art.
Born in 1869, Matisse’s life and work span the first half of the twentieth century, and he became a defining force in the creation of modern art. Known for bold colors and expressive forms, his work is found today in some of the world’s major museums and collections.
“Henri Matisse wanted his art to reflect balance, purity, and serenity, without troubling subject matter and with a soothing, calming influence on the mind,” said Bechtelheimer. “His paintings are portraits of an earthly paradise determined by luminous color and simplification of form. Our Art Talk on November 16 will follow the poetic trajectory of his work which defined innovations in painting in the early decades of the 20th century and continues to inform artistic dialogues today.”
Refreshments will be in Merkle Gallery beginning at 6:30, with the lecture to follow.
