• Reception Saturday, May 16, 6pm • Exhibit May 4 – June 1
Seeing the world through another’s eyes opens our minds and hearts.
The ViewFinder, our bi-annual juried photographic competition and exhibition, reveals the interests and imagination of shutterbugs throughout our community and beyond. A photograph is a moment suspended in time, a memory shared, a small slice of who we are. They have the power to make us laugh, to cry, to begin a conversation, to see things from a different point of view as we strive to coexist on this big blue marble.
Photographers of all ages submitted their original images, captured with any camera and printed on varied media, for inclusion in the competition. Photographers could use basic corrective editing in the dark room or digitally but no graphic manipulations or touch-ups were allowed. The photos had to have been taken within the last three years and not under supervision or in classroom environment.
This year, Steven E. Ochs, Professor of Art and Interim Chair, Department of Art & Design at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas, returns to judge the competition. Previously Ochs judged the 2007 Viewfinder competition for SAAC, as well as teaching an SLR Photography class for adults and exhibiting his ceramic work in the galleries. He has conducted community workshops in photography all over the SW region of Arkansas. Ochs will select the award winning photographs for Best of Show, First, Second, Third Place, and Honorable Mention. $600 in prize money will be presented to the winning selections during an artist reception hosted in the Merkle and Price galleries on May 16 from 6-8pm.
