Our 2016-17 intern is having a great time working with us!

Sophia said, “As a junior at El Dorado High School, I am looking forward to my time as the SAAC intern. I have been involved with SAAC since I was four years old; I was taking visual art and drama classes before I attended school. In the summer of 2007, I was in the children’s ensemble of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. This was my first SAAC summer musical, and has led me to partake in countless shows since then.
From growing up in the arts center, I have learned many valuable life skills that I hope others can learn as well. During my time as the intern, I hope to learn more of the business side of the arts. Possessing skills other than those used on stage is essential to the 21st century performer. In the career world, performers are entrepreneurs, and they need to be able to treat their art forms as their business. I am eager to gain the information that will help me succeed in college and in my career life, and SAAC is a prime learning environment.”

She added, “At SAAC, I have primarily been on stage. I started in drama classes with Darrin Riley in shows such as Bugsy Malone Jr. by Alan Parker and Paul Williams, and Mmmbeth by Allison Williams. During the summer musicals, I have played Veruca Salt in Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, the Artful Dodger in Oliver! based on Charles Dickens’ novel, and Dorothy in Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz. I have taken voice lessons from Karen Watkins at SAAC, and she helped me transition from musical theatre into the world of classical music. My first opera was Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors and I have done multiple Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.”

Sophia also appeared on stage in the Callaway Theatre as Jojo in Seussical. She worked in the light booth for A Southern Christmas Carol and for Seussical.
