For SAAC’s 2018 summer musical, the theatre committee has selected “Singin’ in the Rain”. The award winning musical is part of SAAC’s “Hooray, It’s Hollywood” season. Considered the”Greatest Movie Musical of All Time”, the script was faithfully and lovingly adapted by Broadway legends Betty Comden and Adolph Green, from their original award-winning screenplay.

“Singin’ in the Rain” includes some of the best-loved comedy routines, dance numbers, and love songs ever written, including “Good Mornin’,” “Make ‘em Laugh,” and – of course – the show-stopping dance number, “Singin’ in the Rain.” Adapted from the motion picture, the plot of the Broadway musical stage version closely adheres to the movie. The musical opened on July 2, 1985 at the Gershwin Theatre after 39 previews, and ran for 367 performances, closing on May 18, 1986. Originally directed and choreographed by post-modern choreographer Twyla Tharp, the opening night cast starred Don Correia as Don Lockwood, Mary D’Arcy as Kathy Selden, Richard Fancy as Roscoe Dexter, Faye Grant as Lina Lamont, and Peter Slutsker as Cosmo Brown.

The movie musical “Singin’ in the Rain” has been beloved since the moment it premiered, earning the top spot atop AFI’s 100 Years of Musicals list and, in 2007, was ranked as the fifth greatest motion pictures of all time. The stage version of the musical pours down delight, capturing the waning days of the silent screen era as they give way to new-fangled “talkies.”
