The South Arkansas Arts Center will host two workshops for beginners and non-artists in August. Beginners Pastel class, taught by Kelly Campbell, will be Saturday, August 12, and Cindy Snelson will teach Corks & Canvas on Wednesday, August 16, 6-9pm.

For Beginners Pastel Class, join Kelly from 10:00am-3:00pm and learn the basics of using soft pastels on sanded paper. Students will also learn to do underpainting and the basics of using different kinds of soft pastels to create an original painting.

Cost for the class is $45.00. All supplies are included in the cost. Participants are asked to bring a lunch and also a photo to work from. Limited to 10.

A retired educator, Kelly is employed at the South Arkansas Arts Center where she is the general greeter, gallery manager, Visual Arts liaison, and Executive Assistant. She also teaches beginners’ pastel classes and Corks & Canvas classes at SAAC. Kelly participated in the “Take a Seat: A Night at the Arboretum” chair auction with “Let’s Dance!”, and was accepted into the SAAC Juried Art Competition in 2011, 2012, and 2014 and 2017. Her work has previously shown in solo exhibits at SAAC in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2017. Kelly also has a solo art show coming up at SAAC in September.

Corks and Canvas, another fun-filled evening of painting and libations on Wednesday, August 16th from 6:00-9:00pm. Corks and Canvas is an art class for non-artists who have always wanted to paint. The instructor takes the class through the step by step process to complete a work of art in 3 hours. Limited to 12.

Leading the class on August 16th will be El Dorado resident and artist, Cindy Snelson. Snelson has been a lifelong crafter and artist, dabbling in stained glass, quilting and painting. She was nominated for the Governor’s Honors, an art program in her home state of Georgia. Snelson said when asked about her love of art, “I am all about color!” Her choice of painting lightning bugs that evening will reflect that love of color.

Cindy has hosted Corks and Canvas at SAAC previously with great reviews from the class participants. Minna Ulmer was in the group and said, “Cindy is a wonderful teacher. She made the class fun and easy for us non-artists. She is very laid-back and makes it very ‘user friendly’. Cindy was very organized and had everything laid out for us- there was no way to mess it up! We all had a great time!”

Cost of the class is $40.00 and covers all supplies and snacks. Bring the beverage of your choice. To register for either of these classes, please call the SAAC office at 862-5474.
