Out of the Fire: The Art of Raku and Pit Firing showcases ceramic works by Little Rock artist Luke Kramer that celebrate the ancient firing techniques of Raku and pit firing. Embracing the unpredictable nature of fire as a creative collaborator, each vessel features one-of-a-kind crackle patterns, smoky surfaces, metallic sheens, and flashes of color that can never be exactly replicated. The exhibition explores transformation – not only of clay into ceramic, but also of intention into unexpected beauty.
The exhibit will be on display August 3 through September 25 in the Price Gallery with an opening reception on Monday, August 3, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. honoring the August gallery artists. Guests are invited to meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and explore the three new exhibitions.
“In a world that asks us to plan, predict, and control, Raku and Pit Firing invite us to embrace the chaos,” Kramer said. “These works remind us that certainty is often an illusion, and that a little unpredictability can be an extraordinary creative partner.”
Kramer, who works as an advocate in rare disease research, discovered pottery as a creative passion that quickly became a lifelong pursuit. His work balances craftsmanship, experimentation, and artistic expression while exploring transformation—not only of clay into ceramic, but also of intention into unexpected beauty.
This exhibition invites visitors to embrace the beauty found in uncertainty and discover how spontaneity can become an extraordinary creative partner.
