Art Talk with Gay Bechtelheimer
Artist and educator Gay Bechtelheimer will return to the SAAC stage with a new spring “Art Talk” lecture series. Please join us for a brief reception, followed by an entertaining dive into the context, characters, and culture of a variety of art movements.

For this lecture, presented in conjunction with SouthArk’s “Arts in April,” Bechtelheimer will delve into the rule-breaking modernity and enduring popularity of the Impressionists. The free event will begin with refreshments in the lobby at 6:30 p.m, followed by Bechtelheimer’s onstage presentation.
Impressionism has its roots in 19th century France, where a group of adventurous artists made the radical choice to leave their classical, formal studios behind to paint in the open air. Artists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot focused on capturing authentic moments in a fresh, immediate style. Today, Impressionism is widely appreciated for its modernity, forgoing realistic portrayals for vivid and fleeting impressions of life and landscape.
“They sought to capture on their canvases a moment in the day, a breath of life, a richly colored tapestry of the outdoors lit by the ever shifting light of the sun,” said Bechtelheimer. “Our Art Talk will look at the development of the movement, the artists associated with Impressionism, and the work that joyously defines the era.”
