Long before online shopping and big-box retailers made everyday items readily available, people relied on creativity and resourcefulness to make many of the things they needed. The South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) is bringing that spirit back with For the Love of Lost Art, a four-part workshop series led by local artist and wordsmith Elizabeth Legg, with assistance from her mother, Jennifer Legg.

Beginning in November, each workshop explores a different skill inspired by generations who transformed everyday materials into practical, beautiful creations. Workshops cost $60 each, and participants may register for one session or any combination of the four.

The series kicks off Tuesday, November 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. with “Firestarters.” While sipping on apple cider and nibbling on chocolate chip cookies, participants will transform everyday household materials into 12 easy-to-light, non-toxic firestarters featuring naturally fragrant elements such as cinnamon, orange and pine. The finished creations are perfect for cozy fall and winter fires or thoughtful homemade gifts.

On Tuesday, December 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., enjoy hot chocolate and cookies where “Christmas Herbal Sugar & Salt Lip & Body Scrubs” will bring a festive twist to natural self-care. Participants will use herbs, oils and salts to create three seasonal products: a body scrub, bath salts and a lip scrub. Holiday-inspired colors and scents will make these handmade treats as enjoyable to give as they are to use.

The series continues in January 2027 with a two-day Book Binding workshop, where participants will explore the traditional craft of creating books by hand. Tea and scones will be provided. Specific dates and times will be announced.

In February 2027, the series wraps up with “Olive Oil Infusions,” a Valentine’s-themed workshop focused on creating three varieties of infused olive oil. Participants will leave with flavorful additions to their kitchens, perfect for a romantic tapas-style dinner or serving with fresh French bread as an herb-infused dipping oil. Additionally, participants will sample the oil infusions using a variety of different homemade breads. The workshop date and time will be announced.

Legg’s love of art, language and storytelling inspires her appreciation for traditional crafts and the practical skills passed down through generations.

“I’m excited to share with participants things I’ve learned that are not just a great hobby, but are also valuable tools for everyday life - skills my great-grandmother would have considered necessary,” said Legg.

Registration is available through the South Arkansas Arts Center at www.saac-arts.org or by calling 870-862-5474. Participants are encouraged to register early, as space may be limited.
