Things are getting a little spooky, and delightfully mysterious, at the South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) with this month’s Corks & Canvas. Local artist Marla Tomlinson is putting a hauntingly fun twist on the popular art night with “Crow Party” on Thursday, October 22, at 6pm.
In keeping with the spirit of October, participants are invited to join the “murder,” the proper name for a group of crows, and embrace their inner crow. Guests are encouraged to dress in ALL black and bring at least three small trinkets to trade with other participants that they can potentially incorporate into their artwork.
During the workshop, participants will use acrylic paints to create a colorful, festively abstract background on an 11×14 canvas before painting a fun and whimsical crow over the design. Once their crow is complete, participants can incorporate their collected trinkets, creating a one-of-a-kind mixed-media piece.
The inspiration for the trinket exchange comes from the fascinating behavior of crows. Known for their intelligence and curiosity, crows have been observed leaving small objects for people who feed them. Whether motivated by curiosity, learned behavior or simply maintaining a reliable food source, these mysterious exchanges have inspired Tomlinson’s creative concept for the evening.
“Crow Party” is designed for anyone looking to unwind, spend time with friends and experiment with a unique artistic process. Participants will have the opportunity to trade treasures, explore their creativity and enjoy a relaxed evening of conversation and fun. No two crows, or collections of trinkets, are likely to be alike.
Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite beverages to enjoy during the class, while SAAC will provide snacks to keep the creative energy flowing. No previous art experience is necessary.
Space is limited to 12 participants, so early registration is encouraged. The workshop fee is $40. Registration is available through SAAC’s website at saac-arts.org or by calling 870-862-5474.
So, gather your treasures, put on your best black attire and come join the murder for an evening of creativity, conversation and fun. SAAC is located at 110 E. 5th Street in El Dorado.
